![]() ![]() Abigail dreaded going to the Sunday service because she was certain she would be the focus of gossip and derision, and the main topic of her grandfather's sermon. Abigail's Grandpappy, The Reverend Dane, was the minister at the meetinghouse. However, she had no choice but to endure her daughter's punishment even though she knew it was unfair. Hannah, Abigail's mother, had the same high-spirited nature as her daughter. Girls couldn't run in that community and they certainly couldn't pull up their dresses even if it only revealed their ankles. The "sin" that the ten-year-old committed was holding her skirt a few inches off the ground so she could run. The Puritanical tenets under which the people were required to live were harsh, unyielding and unreasonable. The backdrop of the story is the stringent and judgmental society that existed at the time. The story opens with this child being punished with a six-hour sentence in the stockades. ![]() ![]() She is a free-spirited young girl who is strong and opinionated and is very much like her loving mother, Hannah. The main character is ten-year-old Abigail Faulkner. "Sacrifice" by Kathleen Benner Duble is the story of the horrors that a family endured during the Salem witch hunts and subsequent trials in the late seventeenth century in Massachusetts. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() On theirs, the unexplainable disappearance of Ponter leads directly to a murder trial for his lab partner. In this universe, we struggle to understand what happen. A freak quantum science experiment on an alternate Earth sends Ponter Bodditt, a Neanderthal scientist, to our own present-day reality. Plot-wise, this first volume is a thin introduction. As it turns out, Hominids is a flawed book, and certainly still not my choice for the Hugo Award. It took another month for me to take a look at the book and find out for myself whether the furor was deserved. Hey, don’t look at me: I didn’t vote for the book because I hadn’t yet read it, and I hadn’t yet read it because the three volumes of the trilogy hadn’t yet come out. ![]() ![]() While everyone in the room got to hear a wonderful acceptance speech, pundits on the net weren’t so impressed: Over the next few days, anguished comments protested the decision and blames the local-area vote of sabotaging the results. Written well before the pandemic, IN‘s stark parallel to our pandemic driven world in terms of socially awkward interactions, both obligatory and pretentious, soars throughout the story and illustrations.
